Bless her heart

We love Ellie Mae dearly. But she has this habit of howling when she doesn't know where her people are, even if we are in the same place we always are. She does this almost every night.

Momma often brings Ellie back to the bedroom, but Ellie will leave and start howling again. Eventually, Momma will get up and spend time with Ellie until she calms down. Our girl is the sweetest cat in the world ... but bless her heart.

ps - And it's true! Latte does not like cat treats! Some people might consider Squeeze-ups a treat, but in this house, they are one of the four food groups (and she eats those).

EM: Ellie Mae Kat [black, gorgeously floofy lady cat]
L: Latte [tortie/tabby girl kitten]
MK: Momma Kat [Latte and Ellie's human Momma, named Kat]
The Boy: Momma's fiance, Daddy to Latte and Ellie

EM: WHHHHHHEERE ARE MYYYYYYYYYY PEEEEOPLLLLLLEE?!?
{Pause}
EM: HELLO? HELLLLLLLLLOOO?! Momma? Daddy?! Where ARRRRRRE YOOOOOU?
{Pause}
EM: WHHHHHHEERE ARE MYYYYYYYYYY PEEEEOPLLLLLLEE?!?
{Pause}
EM: OH, NO!!! I'm people-less!

EM: MOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMAAA?!?!?
{Pause}
EM: DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDY?!?!
{Pause}
EM: WHHHHHHEERE ARE MYYYYYYYYYY PEEEEOPLLLLLLEE?!?
{Pause}
EM: My life is OVER! I'll never see my Momma or my Daddy ever again!
{Pause}
EM: {GASP} Who will FEED me?!?

{Pause}
EM: Who am I going to dance for?
{Pause}
EM: Who will tell me how pretty I am?
L: {walking into the room} Don't look at me.
EM: Whose lap will I snuggle in?
L: I said, don't look at me! You're way too big to fit in my lap!
EM: EXCUSE ME?!? Can't you see I'm bereft? Devastated? And you INSULT me?
L: They're in the bedroom!
EM: This is the worst day of my life! Where's my Momma?

L: In the bedroom ... like they are every night at this time!
EM: Oh, WOE! My people are gone and my life will never be the same!
L: THEY. ARE. IN. THE. BEDROOM.
EM: I knew this would happen! I knew I'd be all alone!
L: {AHEM!}
EM: All alone!
L: Oh, brother.
EM: BEAR? Where's Bear?!
L: I'm going to go snuggle with Mom and Daddy.
EM: Oh, WOE! It must be nice to have people! I'm people-less! I'll never be okay ever again!
L: {sigh} Have it your way.

EM: WHHHHHHEERE ARE MYYYYYYYYYY PEEEEOPLLLLLLEE?!?
{Pause}
{Momma comes out and grabs Ellie and brings her back to the bedroom}
EM: Momma! Boy, am I glad to see you! I thought I'd lost you!
{Pause}
EM: {seeing her Daddy on the bed} What's HE doing here?
The Boy: I LIVE here!
EM: But ... but ... {GASP} and what's SHE doing here?
L: I told you I'm snuggling with my Mom and Daddy!
EM: But that's MY Momma and Daddy! I don't see anyone else here!
MK: {sigh}.
EM: Momma! She's trying to steal you!

The Boy: Hey! What about me?
EM: Momma said it's nice to share. So Latte can have you.
The Boy: I guess Latte will get your treats then.
L: Blech. No thanks.
EM: Momma, I thought you were gone FOREVER!
L: BOO!
EM: {running out of the bedroom} AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
{Two minutes pass}
EM: WHHHHHHEERE ARE MYYYYYYYYYY PEEEEOPLLLLLLEE?!?

{Pause}
EM: HELLO? HELLLLLLLLLOOO?! Momma? Daddy?! Where ARRRRRRE YOOOOOU?
{Pause}
EM: WHHHHHHEERE ARE MYYYYYYYYYY PEEEEOPLLLLLLEE?!?
{Pause}
EM: I'm people-less again!
L: {still in the bedroom} Bless her heart.
The Boy: What about me? Why didn't ...
L: Bless your heart too!

  1. Poor Ellie Mae, maybe you are afraid of the dark. I think you feel insecure because you didn't have a great start in life. Your people love you and will never let you go back on the streets.

  2. Ellie Mae, did you learn this hollering trick from our Sweetie?
    She does the same thing, which we figured was because she is deaf.
    But now, we aren't so sure...

    1. Haha! With Ellie, she sounds so sad, it breaks my heart! Of course, it could be a huge con. Bear certainly taught me about those!

  15. Excuze me, but there are rulz about howling at night? I had no idea! Yoo see, I like to play with my favorite toy, Dolly Meow, throughout the night. I make very cuuute squeals of delight while I play. And then ... after awhile... I hear my Momma whisper "Dammit Dori, enough!" That's my signal to come to bed and snuggle. Why she waits so long to say Dammit Dori, I have no idea. I would give up Dolly Meow for snuggles after two seconds. Love, Dori

  17. Ellie...you already know my mommy loves you. Admiral did that too, and Mom read that Admiral was exhibiting signs of feline dementia. She did this from 12 am to 4. Every night. It was very very hard to deal wit in a small home. I think now there are meds that might be given to help.

    1. I don't think it's related to feline dementia. Ellie's done this as long as she's lived here (we adopted her when she was six). Bear was just A LOT better about being there for her than the kitten - so it seems like it's getting worse. The kitten couldn't care less, when Bear would run to her right away (he was really good about that). She also does this at all times of the day and night - whenever she's left "alone" in our family room. I'm watching her closely for other symptoms as well :)
